A quest to buy a notebook and pen becomes the adventure of a lifetime for six year old girl in Afghanistan. After successfully carrying out a string of transactions to raise the money, she is set upon by a group of boys playing frighteningly realistic war games.

This fable like first feature from 19 year old Iranian director Hannah Makhmalbaf (daughter of Moshen, best known for the wonderful and prophetic 2001 feature Kandahar) is set in the Afghan cave village where Talliban soldiers destroyed centuries old carvings of the Buddha in 2001.

Featuring some stunning imagery and an enchanting performance from its young lead, it is by turns a charming and devastating study of the effects of warfare on young children.

Thursday 02 April @ 7.30pm Salisbury Arts Centre (Cafe & Bar open from 6.30pm).
Tickets £6 from the Arts Centre Box Office: 01722 321 744 or on the door.

Please join me in the White Room after the screening, where I will be leading an informal discussion about the film.
