Jacobo is the owner of a down trodden sock factory and is deeply immersed in the dullness of everyday life. When his brother Herman comes from Brazil, Jacobob, desperate to prove his life has added up to something, asks his assistant, Marta, to pretend she's to be his wife. The set-up may be that of farce, but the deadpan comedy almost dares us to laugh. This is a timeless story told with a humane, compassionate touch. The film has won 18 international festival awards.
